FERRIS PUBLIC LIBRARY: More than Books (February 15, 2024)

We have a fantastic book display to begin your reading journey for Black History Month.

Several books are available to enrich your child’s knowledge of black history or enjoy exploring the diverse and powerful voices of Black authors.

Mark your calendars for our Black History Month celebration on Thursday, Feb. 22, where we will hold a “Historical Figures in Black History” bingo session from 4 – 4:30 p.m. and begin the movie “Soul” (rated PG) at 4:30. Popcorn will be provided.

If you missed our Valentine’s Day book display, you could still come enjoy a “Blind Date with a Book”, which will run through the end of February!

Pick from a selection of books wrapped in paper with subtle hints of the plot and genre disclosed on the front. The author and title will remain a mystery until you unwrap your book at home.

After your date, complete a “Rate Your Date” bookmark & return it with your book. Stop in soon to find your book soulmate!

Story Time is hosted every Wednesday from 10:30 – 11 a.m. Children are treated to stories, fun activities, and a snack. Before leaving, your child may choose a prize from the treasure chest.

After-School Game Time is held each Thursday from 3:30 – 5 p.m. Children can play the PS5 on the large screen in the meeting room and board games are also available.

NEW BOOKS: “Lone Oak Crossing” by Janet Dailey, “Second Act” by Danielle Steel, “The Good Part” by Sophie Cousens, “An Amish Cinderella” by Shelley Shepard Gray, and “My Name is Barbara” (Dewey BIO) by Barbara Streisand.

FUN FACT: Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2024 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of “visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary, and other forms of cultural expression.”

The library is located at 301 E. 10th St., across from Mutz Ballpark. Library staff may be reached at ferrislibrary@ferristexas.gov or (972) 544-2110, Option 9.
