Lessons and Carols coming to Waxahachie
WAXAHACHIE – St. Mark the Evangelist Anglican Church in Waxahachie warmly invites the entire community to share in a Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
This year, the traditional Christmas service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in the sanctuary of Christ the King Lutheran Church, 301 W. US-287 Bypass in Waxahachie.
This special celebration has a long and well-loved history; the first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was held on Christmas Eve in 1918 at King’s College, Cambridge.
The Rev. Eric Milner-White, dean of the college, had served as an army chaplain during World War I and introduced this carol service as a way to draw people back to Christian worship after the grief of the war.
The service was meant to be “a gift to the city of Cambridge.”
In a similar spirit, St. Mark’s offers this service as a gift to the people of Ellis County. Short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels will be interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.
A quartet of talented vocalists are sure to help make the service a memorable one. Soprano Marcie Ellen Duplantis, an adjunct professor of voice at TCU and member of the Dallas Opera Chorus, will be joined by soprano Olivia Flores, baritone Jacob Brown, and tenor Drew Echols. Christ the King’s director of worship and music ministry, Kurt Hilsabeck, will be the organist for the evening.
St. Mark the Evangelist Anglican is a mission work of the Reformed Episcopal Church (recus.org), currently meeting at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
