Ferris mail carrier saves woman’s life
FERRIS – While we have come to expect many things from mail carriers over the years, saving a life is not something on the list of a mail carrier’s job description.
But, that is what mail carrier Martin Hernandez was recently called to do.
Hernandez saved the life of an 80-year-old woman in Ferris after she was attacked by two boxer/pit bulls when she went outside to retrieve her mail.
Hernandez saved the woman, and was able to keep the dogs from biting the woman repeatedly.
While he said he did not know what type of breed the dogs were, he believed they were a mixed breed appearing to be of the pit bull/boxer persuasion.
The mail carrier said he had previously seen the two dogs; however, the dogs were normally fenced in and not a danger.
In fact, Hernandez said this was the first time he had been called to save a life from aggressive dogs.
“Martin is a very dependable carrier,” said Ferris Postmaster Wanda S. Curry. “He is always available when needed for service, and always completes his job as instructed by USPS policy.
“He is safety conscious and had dog spray available for the above situation. He is a first team pick.”
The lady who was attacked by the dogs received 18 stitches inside the bite wound, and 13 stitches additional.
Carol Hunt, Strategic Communications Specialist, Texas 1 and Florida 1 Districts, U.S. Postal Service said fortunately Hernandez was not injured in the attack.
