The believer’s mission statement (part 1)
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings (the gospel of Jesus Christ) to the poor.” – Isaiah 61:1
The prophet Isaiah prophesied of the beginning of the Messiah’s ministry years ahead in the future. Jesus had just been baptized by John and blessed by His heavenly Father’s love for Him as the Holy Spirit descended upon Him.
Jesus was about to begin His ministry as He was led into the wilderness to be tested by the devil and when He emerged He eventually went back to His hometown of Nazareth where He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and opened the book of Isaiah to read. Jesus read the prophesy of His mission statement, written eons before and then closed the book and said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
This is the mission statement of every born again, spirit filled believer who has given their life to follow Jesus. We are all called to follow in His footsteps and fulfill that which the Holy Spirit has anointed us to do as His disciples, for we are His body today in the earth!
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because He anointed us (baptized us in the Holy Spirit) to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent us to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” – Luke 4:18,19
