The dynamics of discipleship (part 39)
Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. – II SAMUEL 11:6
David knew the scripture, surely the ten commandments.
“You shall not commit adultery.” but his heart was hardened by his sin and all he could think about was to hide his tracks.
This is what happens when we sin and don’t confess and repent – we justify what we have done and one sin leads to another.
Uriah was a faithful Gentile warrior in David’s company of mighty men, a better man that he – and Joab sent him back from the front lines to consult with the king. David’s scheme was to get Uriah drunk and send him home to Bathsheba and “Bam” problem solved. But David didn’t know how faithful Uriah was because he refused to go home to his wife while his cohorts were engaged in battle.
David tried twice to get him drunk but Uriah refused a second time, so David signed his death warrant and sent him with it to Joab. Now that is a faithful man, for David to know that Uriah was trustworthy enough to carry his own death sentence without looking at it.
Joab, a crusty old general and commander of David’s army read the note and didn’t blink an eye and sent Uriah into the heat of battle and then pulled back from him, allowing the enemy to kill him.
And when her mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. – II SAMUEL 11:27
