Veteran Treatment Court approved in Ellis County
ELLIS COUNTY – Last week, Ellis County was approved for a grant for a Veterans Treatment Court program.
The grant was approved for the 2023/2024 grant year by the Texas Veterans Commission.
The Ellis County District Attorney’s office applied for the grant in December of last year, and the next step will be the final approval by the Ellis County Commissioner’s Court before funding is released.
Grants for programs like this pertaining to veterans is a win in Ellis County as it goes towards helping those who have served in the United States military.
With this money, it will allow Ellis County Veterans who have been arrested for criminal offenses to apply for what is called an intensive diversion program.
The requirements include being a member or discharged member of the United States Armed Forces who has suffered from brain injury, mental illness, PTSD or who has experienced military sexual trauma during military service as having pertained to the criminal conduct.
Ellis County DA Ann Montgomery said she has worked hard to get a program such as this one in Ellis County.
The Ellis County and District Attorney’s Office will have approval for applicants who will be allowed to enter the program.
District Judge and Armed Services Veteran Judge William D. Wallace of the 378th District Court will provide supervision over the program, and last year the Commissioner’s Court approved a position for a Veterans Court Coordinator.
