FERRIS PUBLIC LIBRARY: More than Books (October 12, 2023)
Texas will experience a celestial double feature soon, with not one but two solar eclipses visible within the next six months.
First up is the “ring of fire” annular solar eclipse on Oct. 14. If you are inside the path of the annular solar eclipse, you will see the dramatic sight of the Sun as a thin ring, almost but not completely eclipsed by the Moon. Daylight will be dimmed considerably.
We are inviting friends and families to our upcoming free, educational Solar Eclipse Viewing Party from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., where we will also be passing out solar eclipse viewing glasses.
Story Time is hosted every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Children are treated to stories, fun activities, and a snack. Before leaving, your child may choose a prize from the Treasure Chest to take home.
After-School Game Time is held each Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Children can play the PS5 on the large screen in the meeting room, board games are also available.
NEW BOOKS: “Rancher’s Forgotten Rival: The Carsons of Lone Creek #1” by Maisey Yates, “None of This Is True” by Lisa Jewell, “Holly” by Stephen King, “Payback in Death” by J.D. Robb, “Tom Clancy Weapons Grade” by Don Bentley, and “A Life with Ghosts: True, Terrifying, and Insightful Tales from My Favorite Haunts” (Dewey 133) by Steve Gonsalves.
FUN LIBRARY FACT: One of the oldest public libraries in the country opened in 1790 in Franklin, Massachusetts, where residents circulated books donated by Benjamin Franklin.
The Founding Father once started his own lending library in 1731 in Philadelphia called the Library Company, but it required a subscription fee of 40 shillings.
The library is located at 301 E. 10th St., across from Mutz Ballpark. Library staff may be reached at ferrislibrary@ferristexas.gov or (972) 544-2110, Option 9.
