Midlothian law enforcement officer lost in line of duty has street named after him

MIDLOTHIAN – A Midlothian law enforcement officer who lost his life in the line of duty in October 1987 will have the street, which the new Midlothian Public Safety and Municipal Court facility will be located on once complete named after him; George Raffield Jr. Way.

Raffield, 21, had only been in Midlothian a year when murdered by two students at Midlothian High School where he was on an undercover assignment at the campus to find drugs there.

Prior to his employment with Midlothian Police Department, Raffield worked briefly for the Wilmer Police Department and then as a reserve officer and dispatcher for the Red Oak Police Department. 

Hired by Midlothian for the undercover job because he was young, it was determined he would be unrecognizable at the high school. He had been promised a transfer to patrol after his uncover assignment and spent a month training with the Dallas Police Department’s narcotics division. 

Unaware that the suspect he had befriended as part of his assignment and another student had discovered he was an undercover officer, Raffield rode with them to a secluded area off FM 875, south of Midlothian where he was shot and killed.

“This was a unique opportunity for us to recognize Officer Raffield with naming the street constructed to access the City of Midlothian’s new Court and Public Safety Facility,” said Midlothian Police Chief Carl Smith.
